I heard some wonderful news this week. Apparently German giant Siemens have banned ‘comfortable’ chairs from their boardroom. In fact, there are no chairs at all. Meetings are held standing up.
The consequence? Meetings are shorter and more productive. That’s a good business outcome.
But any business is only as good as its people. Most people who work in offices spend the majority of their time sitting. They sit in front of a computer. They sit in a meeting room. When they go to lunch (if they get away from the desk), they sit again. Few people know how to sit well. It’s not hard but it takes a bit of thought and for most people some Alexander Technique input.
Anyway all these hours of sitting aren’t good for us. Motion is lotion. Joints, muscles, bones and nerves enjoy movement. Variety is key.
So way to go Siemens! Could you spearhead a similar campaign in your workplace? Let me know if you plan to try.

Hi Sarah,
This is very interesting, and I would love to see a reference for this information!
Thanks,

Hi Rajal,
Thank you. I heard this in a workshop so I had to track down the presenter hence the delay in replying. She thinks the source was Kursty Groves who writes about design and innovation. Not an academic source for you, sorry!
